L2 activity 9: Railroad track turns

Integrated · green · carved turns within one groomer width that leave two clean pencil lines, both skis tipping at the same time and rate. Switch to the mistake to see banking: tipping from the hips, the whole body leaning in as one piece. Drag the large view to orbit.

What the examiner looks for

Passing · Carved turns within one groomer width; two clean pencil lines; both skis tip at the same time and rate.

Cue · “Knees and ankles tip, upper body quiet.”

Key movement · The ankles and knees tipping, so the legs tip more than the body leans (hips only slightly inside the feet). Watch the edge angle stay bigger than the inclination.

Lead-ups · Tip-only traverses (no steering); javelin turns.

Mistake · Tipping from the hips (banking): the whole body leans in as one piece, so the lean equals the edge angle and weight drifts to the inside ski.

Fix · Start the tip at the ankles; keep the hips close over the feet.

A simplified, illustrative model on the same carved-turn model: the right way uses green-run edge angles with the legs tipping more than the body leans; the mistake has the same edges, but the whole body banks in, so the lean equals the edge and more weight sits on the inside ski. Angles, loads and efforts follow the shape of real technique but are not measured data.
