What the examiner looks for

Passing · Large turns while stepping ski to ski continuously, including through the edge change; narrow tracks; lifted ski parallel to the snow.

Cue · “Small quick steps, never stop.”

Key movement · The legs flex and extend alternately, with the lifted ski staying level. Watch the lifted-ski height and the two knee angles trade places.

Lead-ups · Stepping on a traverse; 1000 steps on the flats.

Mistake · Big diverging steps that stall: the tip opens away, the ski lifts high, and both feet stop on the snow at the edge change.

Fix · Small steps, skis mostly parallel after the first one.

A simplified, illustrative model on the same turn model: the right way takes about 6 small, parallel steps per turn; the mistake takes 2 big diverging steps per turn and stalls at the edge change. Angles, loads and efforts follow the shape of real technique but are not measured data.
