L2 activity 7: Hockey stop

Integrated · green / gentle blue · glide straight, pivot both skis across the hill together, hold a short sideslip, then set the edges and stop parallel. One stop to the right, then one to the left. Switch to the mistake to see the pelvis and chest swing round with the skis and the tails kick out. Drag the large view to orbit.

What the examiner looks for

Passing · Glide straight, pivot both skis across the hill together, hold a short sideslip, stop parallel.

Cue · “Both feet turn at once, chest stays.”

Key movement · The thighs rotating in the hip sockets, turning much more than the pelvis (it follows a little), with the chest facing down the hill. Watch the femur rotation and pelvis / chest numbers.

Lead-ups · Pivot slips on a groomer; hockey stops at slow speed, then faster.

Mistake · The tails kick out from the hips: the pelvis and chest swing round with the skis.

Fix · Turn the legs in the hip sockets under a quiet upper body; the skis turn around the feet.

A simplified, illustrative model: a straight glide, then both skis pivot 90° across the hill, sideslip to slow down and set the edges to stop. The right way turns the pelvis only about 40° while the thighs do most of the turning and the chest keeps facing down the hill; the mistake swings the pelvis and chest round and the skis turn around the tips, so the tails kick out. Angles, loads and efforts follow the shape of real technique but are not measured data.
